Yesterday, she took to social media to pay tribute to Ian Cuttler, who recently died in a car accident:

Ian was a Grammy Award winning art director and photographer who will be greatly missed.

His memorable work includes album covers for "Destiny Fulfilled" and "Dangerously in Love".

Adah Belle Thoms

Adah Belle Thoms was an African American nurse and one of the first nurses inducted into the American Nurses Association Hall of Fame when it was established in 1976. Thoms cofounded the National Association of Colored Graduate Nurses. She was also director of the Lincoln School for Nurses and fought for African Americans to serve as army nurses during World War I.

Regina Benjamin

Regina Benjamin was appointed by President Barack Obama to be the 18th U.S. Surgeon General in 2009. She earned her medical degree from the University of Alabama and her business degree from Tulane University and was the first black woman under the age of 40 to become a member of the Board of Trustees of the American Medical Association.

Althea Gibson

Althea Gibson became the first African American to play in, and win, the women’s singles title at Wimbledon in 1957. In total, she won 11 Grand Slam tournaments, including six doubles titles, and was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame and the International Women's Sports Hall of Fame.

Carol Moseley Braun

Carol Moseley Braun became the first African American female to be elected into the United States Senate in 1992. Moseley Braun tackled many issues, including women's rights and civil rights during her time in office.

George Hickman

Gerorge Hickman was an original member of the Tuskegee Airmen, America’s first black military fighter pilots. Hickman entered into the Army in 1943 and graduated from the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama in 1944. The former Cadet Captain was the grandson of slaves. He was banned from flying after talking back to a white superior officer who mistreated a fellow black cadet. Despite any racism he experienced, Hickman continued to show kindness and helped others. He, along with the other remaining Tuskegee Airmen received a congressional gold medal in 2007.

Katherine Dunham

Katherine Dunham has been called the "matriarch and queen mother of black dance. " Dunham had one of the most successful dance careers in American and European theater of the 20th century and maintained the Katherine Dunham Dance Company for almost thirty years. Dunham was an innovator in African-American modern dance as well as a leader in the field of dance anthropology in addition to being an author, educator and social activist.

Aja Brown

At 31, Aja Brown currently serves as Mayor of Compton, California. She made history in 2013 as the youngest mayor to ever be elected in Compton, California. She graduated from the University of Southern California with a Bachelor's Degree in Public Policy, Urban Planning and Development and earned a Master's Degree in Urban Planning with a concentration in Economic Development. Brown has outlined an ambitious agenda to transform the poverty-stricken Compton of 97,000 people through fiscal reform, construction projects, jobs, better diet and civic promotion.

Debi Thomas is an American figure skater and physician. She is the 1986 World champion, two-time U.S. national champion and won the bronze medal in the 1988 Olympics. She was inducted into the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 2000 and served as a representative for the U.S. Olympic Committee at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah. Thomas is currently a practicing Orthopedic Surgeon and philanthropist, supporting the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Ara Parseghian Medical Research Foundation.

Sheila Crump Johnson

Sheila Crump Johnson is a successful American entrepreneur, television and film producer, and business woman. Johnson co-founded BET and is the first African American woman to be an owner or partner in three professional sports franchises, the Washington Capitals (NHL), the Washington Wizards (NBA), and the Washington Mystics (WNBA). Johnson is a Global Ambassador for CARE, a humanitarian organization fighting global poverty.

Fannie Lou Hamer

An American voting rights activist and civil rights leader, Fannie Lou Hamer was instrumental in encouraging African Americans to register to vote. Hamer also worked for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, which fought racial segregation and injustice in the South. In 1964, she helped found the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party and attended the Democratic National Convention that year. Hamer gained her a reputation as an electrifying speaker and activist of civil rights through her deep religious values and plain spoken manner.

Josephine Baker

A talented dancer and entertainer, Josephine Baker stared in the film Zouzou, becoming the first African-American female to star in a motion picture. She gained international success in France during the 1920s with her performances at the Folies Bergère cabaret music hall and famously refused to perform for segregated audiences. Baker became a French citizen in 1937, and became the first American-born woman to receive the Croix de Guerre French military award for her aid in the French Resistance during World War II.

Barbara Jordan

Barbara Jordan was a force to be reckoned with in American politics, serving in the Texas House of Representatives, the Texas Senate, and the US House of Representative. She was the first black woman to ever win a senate seat in Texas. Jordan became the first black woman from a southern state to enter the U.S. House of Representatives in 1972 and was the first African-American woman to deliver the keynote address at a Democratic National Convention. She received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, among numerous other honors and became the first African-American woman to be buried in the Texas State Cemetery upon her death in 1996.

Madame C.J. Walker

Madame C.J. Walker was a female entrepreneur who created specialized hair products for African Americans and became the first female self-made millionaire in America. She cumulated her fortune through hard work, innovative ideas, and a fierce dedication to her craft and her people. By the time of her passing in 1919, Walker had built one of the largest African American owned manufacturing companies in the world with an international network of over 15,000 Madame Walker agents, beauty schools in three states, and a 32 room mansion at Irvington-on-the-Hudson, New York.

Guion Bluford

Boasting a resume filled with military flight experience and advanced degrees in aerospace engineering, Guion Bluford became the first African-American astronaut to reach space in 1983 on the Space Shuttle Challenger. He was a Colonel in the Air Force and participated in four shuttle flights between 1983 and 199. He was inducted into the International Space Hall of Fame in 1997, and inducted into the United States Astronaut Hall of Fame in 2010.

Today's story for Black History Month is about Ella Baker:

Ella Baker believed in inspiring ordinary people to work together and lead themselves. She dedicated her time and energy to empowering people to make critical changes in their life and tirelessly fought sexism within the Civil Rights movement. Baker played a key role in some of the most influential organizations of her time, including the NAACP, Martin Luther King's Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. The Ella Baker Center for Human Rights was founded to continue her legacy of giving people opportunities and tools to work together to strengthen communities so that all can thrive.

Kirani James

Kirani James is a Grenadian sprinter who won the gold medal at the London 2012 Olympics securing his place on the world stage as an athletics superstar. James was 19 year old when he became the first non-American athlete to run the 400 meter in less than 44 seconds,. He is Grenada's first Olympian in any sport.

Hattie McDaniel

Hattie McDaniel became the first African-American to win an Oscar in 1940 for the role of Mammy in Gone With The Wind. She had to sit at a blacks-only table during the Oscar ceremony because of segregation laws of the time. In addition to acting in many films, McDaniel was a professional singer-songwriter, comedian, stage actress, radio performer, and television star; she was the first black woman to sing on the radio in America. She received screen credits for only 80 films, however McDaniel was in over 300 films during her expansive career.

Mandla Maseko

Mandla Maseko will be the first black African in space. The South African DJ beat out 1 million other international competitors and will be one of 23 to enter space on an hour-long excursion on the Lynx Mark II spaceship in 2015. Maseko had to endure a series of tests including assault courses, skydiving, air combat and G-force training, building and launching a rocket, and a written aptitude test in order to be accepted into the program. When asked about his motivation for wanting to go to space he answered, “I want to defy the laws of gravity".

Florence Joyner

Florence Griffith Joyner, also known as Flo-Jo, is a record setting, Olympic gold medalist. She set the world record for the 100 meter and 200 meter dash in 1988 and is credited as being the “fastest woman of all time”. Joyner is attributed with increasing the profile of track and field for girls.
